Teething |
|
Teething is the normal process of teeth erupting through a baby's gums. The first tooth will appear between 3 and 12 months. Your child may experience increased saliva, drooling, and mild gum pain. Teeth work through the gums continuously from 6 months to 24 months of age. Many unrelated illnesses are blamed on teething. Teething does not cause fever, sleep loss, diarrhea, constipation, or diaper rash. These symptoms are due to something else. To treat teething, massage the swollen gums with your finger for 1-2 minutes. You may use small ice cubes instead. Solid teething rings with liquid in the center can be chilled and used to relieve teething discomfort. Do not use teething gels. They do not work and they can cause choking or a drug reaction. Use Tylenol instead. If you have any questions about teething ask our doctors or nurse practitioner at your next visit. |
